What You Need
1
large pizza crust, homemade or store-bought
1
cup
grated mozzarella
1
tbsp
extra-virgin olive oil (optional)
3
garlic cloves, chopped
2
tbsps
olive oil
1
can (796 mL/28 oz) Italian plum tomatoes
2
tbsps
Italian spices (or a mix of dry oregano and basil)
1
pinch crusted red chili peppers
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Shape sausage meat into 20 small meatballs using 1 Tbsp each. Arrange on a cooking sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake in oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
- For the sauce: Meanwhile, in a saucepan, warm olive oil over low heat and gently cook the garlic (do not brown). Pour tomatoes into a bowl and crush by hand or using a potato masher. Transfer to saucepan along with remaining ingredients, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until thickened.
- Place pizza dough on a cooking sheet. Spread generously with pizza sauce. Arrange meatballs on pizza and sprinkle with mozzarella.
- Bake 10 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese has melted. Decorate with previously hand-torn basil leaves. If desired, drizzle with a little olive oil and serve right away.
